Little Cigars

Belgische Jagd little cigars are cigars from Belgium

The Belgische Jagd little cigars developed early in Europe as part of its own local cigar tradition. Belgische Jagd little cigars from Belgium have always been and are still very much based on the Dutch cigar culture. In Belgische Jagd little cigars, we also speak of Sumatra cigars, which were first rolled by hand until machines replaced manual work.

The production of Belgische Jagd little cigars is located in the Flemish part of Belgium, which has always been dominated by trade and, rather than the Walloon part with its industry, was determined by a certain pleasure. Vandermarliere with its founder Maurits started in the 20s of the last century in Moen, Belgium with a small shop for international and Belgian cigars. In 1926, machines for the production of Belgian cigars were purchased; a year later, 60,000 cigarillos were already being produced, and competition was being made with the large Germany, which was left behind due to its machine ban.

The J. Cortès brand was integrated into the family business through a purchase in 1986 and is now the company’s flagship.

Belgische Jagd little cigars have always been made from the same tobacco as the sisters from the Netherlands. Sumatra was officially a colony of the Dutch crown from 1824. The legendary British-Dutch Treaty manifested the predominance of the Dutch on the Indonesian island and paved the way for a flourishing tobacco trade between Sumatra, the Netherlands and neighboring Belgium.

In the storm and drang phase of the cigar industry in the late 19th century, the Belgische Jagd little cigars developed in line with its neighbors in the north. In recent years, however, there has been an interesting diversification of Belgische Jagd little cigars. While in the Netherlands production is now almost exclusively mechanical and in huge numbers, in Belgium we still find some traditional handicraft companies that manufacture classic cigars from Belgium in the old tradition. Often, all manufacturing steps are still carried out entirely by hand. Belgische Jagd little cigars from Belgium are again playing a leading role in the premium segment in Europe.
